On January 7, 1953, Capitol Wrestling Corporation was founded by Vincent J. McMahon and the company became a member of the National Wrestling Alliance. In April of 1963, after a ten year relationship with the NWA, McMahon and his partner Toots Mondt withdrew from the NWA and rebranded the CWC into the WWWF - - the World Wide Wrestling Federation. Mondt left the company in the late 1960s, and in 1971 McMahon returned the WWWF into the NWA. In 1979, the company was again renamed, this time to the WWF - - the World Wrestling Federation.
On June 6, 1982, Vincent J. McMahon sold the company to his son, Vincent K. McMahon, and the younger McMahon embarked on a mission to make the WWF the premier wrestling organization in the world. Once again withdrawing the company from the NWA in 1983, Vincent K. McMahon then sought to get WWF programming on syndicated television, using the money generated from the television deals to sign stars such as Hulk Hogan, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Andre the Giant, and more. The WWF began to tour nationally, requiring more capital, which is when McMahon came up with the idea for his biggest idea yet - - WrestleMania. The first WrestleMania was held at Madison Square Garden on March 31, 1985, to major success, putting the WWF on the pop culture map.
Over the next 16 years, the WWF would see a boom in popularity, especially during the “Monday Night Wars” with rival promotion World Championship Wrestling (WCW). In March of 2001, the WWF acquired the rights to WCW which saw many new talents join the company as a result of the merger. In May of 2002, the company was once again renamed, this time to WWE - - World Wrestling Entertainment. For the next 20 years, the WWE has become exactly what Vincent K. McMahon had envisioned when he purchased the company from his father - - the premiere wrestling organization in the world.
In 2024, Vincent K. McMahon decided he was ready to retire from the business that he helped put on the map, selling the company to his daughter, Stephanie, and her husband, Triple H. Making the decision to hit the reset button in the wake of this new deal, Stephanie and Triple H announced that they were eliminating both SmackDown! and NXT from WWE's programming lineup, leaving only the WWE's flagship show, Monday Night RAW. They also decided to take another step towards a fresh start by vacating all championships and wiping the roster clean, while leaving the door open for anyone who may want to return while also extending the invitation to anyone who may want to jump ship from other promotions to join this new era of the WWE.
Now, with William Regal at their side as the General Manager of the company, and ready to make their mark on both the company and the industry as a whole, Stephanie and Triple H are looking forward to continuing the family tradition of maintaining WWE’s status as the premiere wrestling organization in the world.
Following the first PLE of the new era, Night of Champions, Stephanie McMahon relieved William Regal of his duties as WWE General Manager, solidifying her and her husband as the sole authority figures of the company.
