In 2005, a unique opportunity was created for the men of the WWE with the creation of the Money in the Bank ladder match. With the inaugural match taking place at WrestleMania 21, six men on the RAW brand competed in a ladder match with a briefcase hanging above the ring. The objective: climb the ladder and retrieve the briefcase, which contains a contract for a guaranteed World Championship opportunity for the briefcase holder, which is good for one year. And to really up the ante, the briefcase can be cashed in any time, any place.
In 2010, Money in the Bank went from being a featured match at WrestleMania every year to becoming it's own Premium Live Event, with two ladder matches taking place, one with the SmackDown male Superstars competing for a contract for a World Heavyweight Championship match, and one with the RAW male Superstars competing for a contract for a WWE Championship match. This continued until 2017, when the event was exclusive to the SmackDown brand. 2017 was also the year that the women of the WWE got their own Money in the Bank match, earning a one year contract for a guaranteed Women's Championship match.
In 2018, Money in the Bank once again became a dual-branded event, with the men's ladder match consisting of four RAW Superstars and four SmackDown Superstars battling for a contract for the World Championship of their choosing, with the women's ladder match also consisting of four RAW Superstars and four SmackDown Superstars battling for a contract for the Women's Championship of their choosing.
In 2024, when Stephanie McMahon and her husband Triple H purchased the WWE, they made the decision to keep both the Money in the Bank match and event, as they felt the unpredictable nature of the Money in the Bank cash-ins would help keep the WWE Universe on their toes. Below are the winners of each Money in the Bank match since they took ownership of the company.
